For nature enthusiasts, the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, located about 85 km from Chennai, is a haven for birdwatching. This sanctuary, one of the oldest in India, attracts thousands of migratory birds from around the world. A Historical Sanctuary
Established in 1798 by the British, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located in the Maduranthagam Taluk of Chengalpattu District (erstwhile Kancheepuram). The sanctuary covers an area of 40.348 hectares and includes a small irrigation tank in Vedanthangal village, surrounded by a 5 km zone around the lake. Recognized internationally as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA), it belongs to the Coromandel Coast biotic province.
Rich Biodiversity and Unique Features
The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary’s topography is undulating with a gentle slope in some parts. The landscape surrounding the tank is flat, primarily comprising rocky plains with frequent low ridged, denuded small hillocks. The soil in the wetland is mostly clay with a fertile guano layer, providing an enriched environment that benefits the local agriculture. The wetland features a 950-meter long bund to control soil erosion and manages water outflow through sluices.
Salient Features:
– Barringtonia and Acacia Nilotica Trees : These trees in the tank serve as both nesting and roosting sites for birds.
– Guano Enrichment : Bird excreta, called “guano,” enriches the water and benefits farmers by increasing their agricultural yield.
– International Recognition : Listed as an international bird and biodiversity area with IBA site code IN-TN-29 by BirdLife International.

Spread across 74 acres in the Chengalpattu district, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a picture-perfect place for bird watchers and lovers. The sanctuary is home to more than 4,000 species of birds, including migratory species like the Grey Wagtail, Garganey, Blue-winged Teal, Common Sandpiper, Pintail, Snake Birds, Moorhens, Darters, Spot-billed Duck, Large Egrets, Little Egrets, Painted Storks, Shovellers, Grey Pelicans, and Cormorants.
