The Blooming Spectacle at Parunthumpara

Parunthumpara, a popular hill station known for its breathtaking viewpoints, is now drawing more attention thanks to the Neelakurinji blooms. Although the blossoms this time don’t cover a vast area like those in Munnar, they have already started creating a buzz among visitors.

Local social media influencer Akhil Shaji, known for his Instagram page ‘Mountain Pirates,’ recently captured the blooms in a mesmerizing reel. “The flowers started blooming about two weeks ago and are likely to stay fresh for another month or two, especially with the current misty and rainy conditions,” says Akhil, who resides in Vandiperiyar near Parunthumpara. According to him, the flowers have bloomed on the hill directly opposite Parunthumpara’s famous viewpoint.

How to Reach Parunthumpara and Best Time to Visit

To reach the blooming spot in Parunthumpara, visitors coming from Kottayam can follow the Kottayam-Kumily Road. The exact location is slightly ahead of Jose Land Resorts (Eagle Rock Resort) in Parunthumpara. While weekends tend to be crowded, the misty atmosphere and serene beauty make any time of day perfect for a visit.

Akhil mentions that early afternoons, around 1 pm, offer excellent visibility, while mist starts rolling in after 3 pm, adding a magical touch to the scenery. However, the monsoon season makes the area even more enchanting, so plan your visit accordingly.

Conservation and Legal Protection of Neelakurinji

The Neelakurinji flower is native to Kerala’s Western Ghats and is an endemic species found only in select regions between the Nilgiri and Mangaladevi Hills. Due to threats from human activities, the Union government added Neelakurinji to the list of ‘Protected Plants’ under Schedule III of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Uprooting these plants can result in hefty penalties, including a fine of up to Rs 25,000 and imprisonment for up to three years.
