From Ernakulam, it will take approximately an hour and a half to drive to Kochareekkal caves, located in Piramadam. This means that it is only 12 km away from Piravam. It is also a wonderful place to spend quality time with your family in the evenings.

Since the area hasn’t yet attracted many tourists, you won’t encounter a large crowd. If you walk a short distance from the parking area, you can visit the cave sanctuaries. The place is renowned for its ancient caves concealed within the roots of towering ancient trees. The entire area is abundantly green, untouched by modernity, with majestic ancient trees towering over it.

As you descend, you are greeted by the sight of enormous ancient trees scattered all around. In fact, these intimidatingly giant trees are one of the main attractions of this sanctuary. It’s as if they are concealing mysterious secrets within their towering presence. There is a mysterious, haunting atmosphere that almost transports you back in time. Here, you can find two caves. From the first cave, a fountain springs up, and the water from that spring flows downstream to fill the adjacent pond.

The spring is the source of pure freshwater, serving as the drinking water source for the locals. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain the cleanliness of water bodies. Please be mindful and refrain from disposing waste, even if you have food with you. Visitors must take care to avoid polluting the water.

According to locals, the first cave is said to be about 3 km long, although there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. It is worth noting that this cave is quite narrow. Moving on to the second cave, it is located nearby. Unlike the first cave, this one is significantly larger in size. Interestingly, vehicles are parked on top of this cave. The cave is approximately the height of one person and wide enough to comfortably accommodate up to 40 people. Inside the cave, the roots of the grandmother tree spread out like owl hands. To enter the cave, one must step on these roots.

One can’t help but feel that the roots of this massive tree serve as the walls of the cave. The locals have numerous stories surrounding this cave. According to one tale, it is possible to walk inside the cave for up to three kilometers. Another story suggests that these caves were once used as hideouts for war soldiers.

When we stand here, all said and done, we can’t help but feel like we’re part of a sorcerer’s cave, where magic potions are being brewed. The presence of a pond further accentuates that enchanting feeling. We can confidently venture into the shallow pool, but caution is advised due to the presence of rocks. The water from the upper stream cascades down into this pool. During the monsoon season, the stream flows into the pond, resembling a miniature waterfall..

The journey to this place would not be complete without learning more about the towering trees that surround the cave. These Chinese trees can reach heights of up to 40 meters. This Chinese tree, which falls under the category of deciduous trees, can be found in evergreen forests. These trees add a sense of mystery to the place, and one can comfortably hide among the roots of the trees that stand by the pond.

In the evening, this place exudes a fantastical atmosphere, as if we are transported to the heart of an ancient Kavu, surrounded by ponds and immersed in the mystique of witchcraft. No one can be blamed for hearing chants and the sound of bells while standing amidst the pool, quietly enjoying the ambiance of the forest. That’s the best experience Kochareekkal can offer us.

There is a small cave nestled under the shade of the big trees, accessible by climbing up the tree roots. Inside the cave, a cool stream flows, providing a perfect spot for children to play. Sora might have mentioned this serene setting while seeking refuge from the sun under the giant trees. If you enjoy swimming, you can take a dip in the pool below. Kocharikal is a great family-friendly destination that can be easily reached from Ernakulam. Despite the cave having a slightly eerie atmosphere, the entire family can still climb to the top.
