What is the Blue Flag Certification?
The Blue Flag certification is an eco-level tag that is one of the world’s most recognized awards for clean, safe, and environmentally friendly beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. This certification is presented by the Denmark-based agency, Foundation for Environment Education (FEE).
The Blue Flag model aims to provide tourists with clean and hygienic bathing water, amenities, and a safe and healthy environment while ensuring the sustainable development of the area. To qualify for a Blue Flag, 33 stringent criteria relating to environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environmental management, conservation, and safety and accessibility standards must be met.
How is the Blue Flag Awarded?
Individual municipalities apply for the Blue Flag certification to the National Jury, which conducts an initial evaluation before sending approved cases to the International Jury. The International Jury consists of members from the FEE Board, UNESCO, European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT), World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The jury evaluates several qualifications, including waste management, cleanliness, bathing facilities, disability-friendly facilities, parking facilities, solar lighting, and more. The certification is awarded every sailing or bathing season. In 2024, over 5,000 marinas, beaches, and tourist boats across 51 countries received a Blue Flag.
