The Periyar river gushes along the rocky terrain in this area. The rivulets of the Periyar, having separated upstream, join together at this spot and continue their onward journey. The Malayalam word “Poru” means fight, referring to the battle between rocks and water at this location, which gives it its name.
Paniyeli Poru waterfall is a popular tourist spot in the Ernakulam region of Kerala, India. It is formed by a natural bottleneck in the flow of the Periyar River, created by unique rock formations. The river, which is shallow and wide until just before the rock formations, is then forced to flow through narrow crevices in the large rocks and over shallower rocks. The flowing water in this area possesses medicinal properties due to the abundant presence of herbs. Many visitors spend hours swimming in the water. Lifebuoys are being deployed to ensure the safety of the adventurous individuals.

The best time to visit the Panieli Poru waterfall is from November to May. Even during the monsoon season, there are still many visitors. On peak days, around 400 people visit the place daily.

Paniyeli Poru is an eco-tourism destination and picnic spot managed by the Kerala Forest Department. To access the picnic areas and safe spots along the river, there is a nominal entrance fee of Rs. 20/- per adult. 50 Rs for Camera.
