Embark on a thrilling 2 km jungle trek to discover the awe-inspiring Meenmutty Waterfalls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad. What sets Meenmutty Waterfalls apart is its unique triple-decker effect, as the water cascades down from a towering height of nearly 1000 ft over three stages.
Meenmutty Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Kerala, is nestled in the lush green area of the Mepadi forest range. It is located under the South Wayanad forest division, at Chitragiri on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Meenmutty Waterfalls is considered a three-tiered waterfall, with streams that gain immense strength during the monsoon months. Like other waterfalls in the region, it provides a picturesque backdrop for trekkers to enjoy hiking activities. It is also an ideal tourist destination for nature lovers, who can spend their time enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the falls and its surroundings.
Meenmutty is a combination of the Malayalam words “Meen” (fish) and “Mutty” (blocked).
To witness the serene view of water cascading from the golden peak of Ponmudi on the Western Ghats, one must embark on a long walk through the tropical woods. The 2-3 km trek starts downstream at Kallar Village and typically takes around 1 hour. Reaching the place itself is a great pleasure, as one gets to walk through a trail flanked by gigantic trees.
The looping branches and roots of these trees form a green canopy that adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings. For most of the trail, the stream accompanies you, offering multiple entry points to the water where you can take a refreshing dip. However, caution is advised as the rocks can be quite slippery. Along the way to the waterfall, you will also encounter rare birdlife and a variety of butterfly species.
Visitors are not allowed to get too close to the falls, but you can still appreciate the beauty of the cascading water from a safe distance. The best time to do so is from mid-November to March when the sky is clear and the trail is not too slushy.
