The misty hills, the soft, gentle breeze, and the light drizzle create the perfect setting for one to blend with nature. If you are planning a one-day trip with your children, then Illikkal Kallu in Kottayam district is the perfect choice. This huge boulder atop a hill stands tall and looks like a clenched fist challenging the forces of nature. The unique rock formation is a marvel of nature, and the sight of Illikkal Kallu blanketed by mist is a treat for the eyes.

Illikkal Kallu is situated nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. After parking your vehicle in the valley, you will have to trek a while to enjoy the mystical beauty of the ‘kallu’. The lush green vegetation on both sides of the tarred road is simply eye-catching. If you have difficulty walking, you can hail a jeep to reach the hilltop; the jeep rental is Rs 380 for a group of six. No matter how you get to the hilltop, the vibe of Illikkal Kallu is great.

If you want to see the ‘kallu’ up-close, you must trek through a steep, narrow path strewn with round stones. With steel barricades on both sides, you can take each step forward with confidence and without worry. Though the trek is a bit taxing, the view of Illikkal Kallu and the valley below, covered in mist, is awe-inspiring. From the hilltop, the towns below would appear as small dots in an ocean of green. One could also see the minor tributaries of the Meenacahal River flowing like winding nerves from a distance. However, with thick mist all around, the bird’s-eye view from the top would be a bit hazy.

A thick white veil of mist and a gentle breeze are omnipresent in the region. But when the sun shines brightly and nature lifts the misty veil for a while, one can behold the magical charm of Illikkal Kallu, which can only be described as a masterpiece of nature.
