Sharjah Art Foundation presents the Middle East’s first permanent installation of Random International’s Rain Room. Located in Al Majarrah, Sharjah, this unique experience invites visitors to walk through a downpour of rain without getting wet. About the Installation
The Rain Room, created in 2012 by the London and Berlin-based art group Random International, uses 2,500 liters of self-cleaning, recycled water controlled by a network of 3D tracking cameras. These cameras detect human presence and stop the rain from falling directly above any detected movement, allowing visitors to navigate through the rain without getting wet.
Random International’s work often explores the human condition in an increasingly mechanized world, providing emotionally intense and physically engaging experiences. The Rain Room has been previously exhibited at prominent venues like the Barbican in London, MoMA in New York, Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and LACMA in Los Angeles.
Design and Concept
The Rain Room building in Sharjah, designed by Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with SpaceContinuum Design Studio and Shape Architecture Practice + Research, opened in May 2018. It is the first of a series of artist-designed permanent spaces, making it a significant addition to the foundation’s collection.
