No matter which route you take in the district, you are guaranteed to come across at least one small or large waterfall within a kilometer during this season. Let’s explore some of the waterfalls in Idukki that are active during the monsoon. While these places may appear beautiful, they can also pose potential dangers. Visitors are strongly advised to prioritize their own safety and take necessary precautions.
Cheeyappara, valara Falls
These two waterfalls are located on the way to Munnar. Along the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway, between Neriamangalam and Adimali, you will find Cheeyappara Falls conveniently situated on the roadside. Cheeyappara is known for its dense forest, rare flora, and a magnificent seven-tiered waterfall. Valara Falls is characterized by its lush greenery. It is located 42 km from Munnar. Cheeyappara is a popular stopover for visitors to Munnar. The watercourse, which is abundant throughout the year, dries up during the summer.
Thuwanam falls
Thuwanam Falls is renowned as one of the most stunning waterfalls near Munnar. Situated within the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, this captivating waterway can be found in Pambar. Located just eight kilometers from Marayur, near Alampety on the Marayur-Udumalpet state highway. The waterfall cascades from a height of 84 feet, offering a breathtaking sight. For those seeking adventure, the forest department offers guided trekking. This guided trek, starting from Alampety Checkpost, presents a wonderful opportunity to spot rare wildlife amidst the lush green forests of Chinnar. If you are lucky, you may have the opportunity to spot elephants, langurs, mountain squirrels, a variety of butterflies, and various types of birds.
Lakkam Waterfall
Lakkam Falls is a prominent attraction located on the road from Munnar to Udumalpet. It is situated 24 km away from Munnar and 16 km away from Marayur. Located within the Iravikulam National Park, this waterfall is renowned for its pure water that flows from the pristine mountains covered in untouched elephant grass. It serves as a popular destination for tourists visiting Munnar. Even children can safely take a bath. Additionally, there are forest guards to ensure safety. The entry fee is Rs. 50.
Periyakanal Falls
Periyakanal Falls on the Poopara – Munnar road is another watercourse that has the beauty of Kanana. The tea hills border Tata Tea’s Periyakanal estate. The distance from here is 20 km from Munnar. This is the way to Kolukumala.
Powerhouse Falls
After traveling about 20 km from Munnar, you will reach the Powerhouse Falls at Chinnakanal. It is located right on the roadside. During the monsoon season, many people come to see the cool view in the fog and light rain. This waterfall originates from the Devikulam river and is on the way from Munnar to Theni. On both sides of this road are vast tea plantations with long straight lines. The ruins of the powerhouse, which was built during the British era to generate electricity, still stand above the falls. People who go to Kolukumala to watch the sunrise and those who go to Aanairangal Dam come down here to enjoy the natural beauty.
Illappalli Falls
Illappalli Falls is near Manappadi after traveling three kilometers on the road from Moolamattam to Vagaman. During the year many people come to see the cascading waterfall. Those going to the tourist destinations of Vagamon and Thekkady via Moolamattam-Pullikanam state highway also come to enjoy this waterfall. It is a beautiful sight to see the water cascading down the rock from a height of more than 100 meters. Danger lurks in the cliffs here. Those who go near the waterfall through the slippery rocks are in danger. If it rains in the Vagamon area, the water flow will quickly increase here. Getting into water can increase the risk of accidents.
Njandiruki Falls
Njandiruki Falls is a place not visited by many tourists. A place where the potential of monsoon tourism can be fully exploited. The waterfall is located near Poomala in Velliyamatam panchayat. The distance from Thodupuzha is 19 km. The waterfall is within walking distance from Poomala. The water flowing from the top of the mountain and splashing between the rocks is a beautiful sight. Facilities are very limited. Private and KSRTC buses plying the Thodupuzha – Poomala route can also reach here. It is better to park private vehicles at Poomala.
Boothakkuzhi Waterfall
On the Muttam – Moolamattam route, from near the Shankarapilly bus stop, take the road to the right for half a kilometer and you will reach Boothakkuzhi Falls. The specialty of this waterfall is that even children can swim safely. There is a passable road till here.
Aruvikkuth Falls
Aruvikkuth Falls is located half a kilometer away from Malankara Third Mile. To reach the falls, you need to travel approximately 6 kilometers on the Thodupuzha-Muttam road. This beautiful waterfall is situated just before the wild streams merge with Thodupuzha River. You can get close to this waterfall, which cascades through the rocks in tiers. It is a stunning place to visit, especially in combination with the Malankara Dam. Although the waterfall is not very high, its beauty is undeniable. The serene surroundings, the chirping of crickets, the rhythmic sound of the falls, and the mountains looming in the distance all contribute to the beauty of this waterfall. The nearby bridge offers a great viewpoint. However, caution should be exercised as there are pits and trenches formed by the gushing water, making it dangerous to enter the water. There aren’t enough security systems in place here. During the rainy season, the flow becomes stronger. Visitors should take precautions to ensure their own safety.
Thommankuth Falls
Thommankuth Falls, located near Thodupuzha, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kerala. Tourists can easily reach this scenic spot, which is situated in the Thodupuzha Vannapuram Panchayat. It is important to note that Thommankuth is not just a single waterfall, but a collection of multiple waterfalls. Thommankuth is the name given to seven waterfalls: Ezhunilakuth, Nakayam Kuth, Muthimuk Kuth, Kudachiyal Kuth, Chekuthankuth, Thenkuzhikuth, and Koovamalakuth. There are several tiered small lakes along the flow path between them. It is also a favorite destination for adventure lovers, as trekking through these waterfalls offers a thrilling experience. The distance from Thodupuzha via Karimannur is 19 km, while coming from Ernakulam, it is a 34 km journey via Muvattupuzha Vannapuram.
